Spain’s Supreme Court Suspends Voting Rights for Some ‘Law of Grandchildren’ Citizens

The Supreme Court has temporarily stripped voting rights from certain Spanish nationals who obtained citizenship under the ‘Law of Grandchildren’ and are registered in the CERA (the electoral roll for overseas residents). The restriction targets individuals who have not independently proven that their ancestors were exiled on political, ideological, or religious grounds.

Crucially, the ruling does not revoke existing citizenship, nor does it freeze pending nationality applications. An exception applies to anyone holding a consular certificate that officially verifies the statutory grounds for their ancestor's exile. This is a precautionary, interim measure that will remain in force until the court issues its final judgement, for which no date has yet been set.

The move follows a decision handed down in early September 2026 by the Administrative Chamber of the Spanish Supreme Court (Tribunal Supremo).
